The hERG channel in drug discovery
The hERG gene codes for a ion channel protein located on the heart. It is involved in the coordination of the heart’s beating by its ability to conduct electrical current. Several marketed drugs have been shown to interact with this the hERG channel, thereby causing a disorder called QT prolongation. This prolongation can lead to ventricular arrythmias (i.e. torsade de pointes), syncope and sudden death. Therefore the hERG channel is an important anti-target to consider and avoid in the drug discovery process.
